What is cloud computing?
In short, cloud computing is the use of distributed computer processing resources.
According to Wikipedia:
Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet).

Gmail or Hotmail are good examples, when you use your online email you're utilising their resources to transmit, receive and store your email. This is an example of Software As A Service (SaaS), you're using Google's software instead of your own email software.
How can it help me?
Cloud computing can be utilized by small, medium and large companies to reduce costs. This can be achieved primarily by pooling resources. The idea is quite simple, large companies with expensive resources can lease excess computing power out to smaller or less demanding companies. This may be software offered by the cloud providor or it could just be processing power, used for example for crunching large amounts of data.
